I was wondering whether anyone had done for G. Verdi, what G.K Chesterton did for Charles Dickens. Namely given such a wonderfully imaginative, even eccentric account, of his artistic development ? Relating his works to Italian culture, the ideals of the French revolution and his early childhood etc. Have any major Italian writers, written perceptively on Verdi ? As Chesterton, Orwell and Gissing wrote on Dickens ? Thank you in advance for your responses, best wishes to all for the new year !

Hi Bertie
You might like to try Mary Jane Phillips Matz’s excellent Verdi Biography https://onlineshop.oxfam.org.uk/shop/books/music-stage-screen/verdi-hd_200237933?pscid=ps_ggl_shopping&gclid=Cj0KCQiA3NX_BRDQARIsALA3fIIlzHyIpG8l7_g16-TyB5mH_5QJ6eRSlViINAyL1BuKZqbdIFnnspoaApDKEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds. I personally don’t know of a work like Chesterton, Orwell and Gissing wrote on Dickens, but maybe others do? Best for the New Year. Rob.
