Jazzing the classics: loves and hates

Contributor Trevor Harley reminded me of Glenn Gray’s ingeniously jazzed version of César Franck’s Symphony (prompted by my programming the [original] piece in Monteux’s magnificent Chicago recording on today’s Radio 3 ‘Sunday Morning’). Any other ‘faves’ when it comes to jazzing the classics (to put it very simply) – ie, arrangements by Kenton (specifically Wagner), Herbie Hancock, Uri Caine, etc?

  1. So many! Art Tatum’s Massenet Elegie and Dvorak Humoresque and his madcap trio arrangement of Rubinstein’s Melody in F. Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn’s amazingly imaginative Nutcracker Suite. Nat “King” Cole’s Rachmaninov C-sharp Minor Prelude. Sonny Rollins’ take on the Tchaikovsky Pathetique. Dick Hyman recorded a lovely, wistful version of the Chopin C-sharp Minor Waltz with bassist Brian Torff. And, of course, Jelly Roll Morton’s Library of Congress solo rendition of the Miserere from Verdi’s Il Trovatore, and for stride fans, Donald Lambert’s Pilgrim’s Chorus from Wagner’s Tannhauser. The highly underrated jazz pianist Herman Chittison did a fast stride versions of popular classics too. Erroll Garner also jazzed up the aforementioned C-sharp Minor Waltz. I myself do the first movement of Schubert’s D. 960 sonata in the style of Bill Evans!

I am obsessed with strange arrangements of Bach, particularly the Goldberg . Uri Caine is very good in this respect, and does anyone else know an odd collection called “The Gilded Goldbergs” (by Robin Holloway, I think)?

Tim Kliphuis is very good at swing arrangements, but I think I heard him first on one of your programmes.

I have a complete playlist of jazz arrangements in my iTunes library. When I get back to it I’ll see if I can export it and edit the xml file into something presentable.

The Nice: ‘Pathetique’ (live) – exciting, ‘free’, messy, ‘fast’, one of the group knows what’s going on – two of them don’t, it’s somehow still beautiful though… Or Tull’s
‘Bourree’ (surely ‘perfectly Bach…’ ?). There are so many, many more…

  2. Always had a soft spot for this Dizzy Gillespie / Grieg – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR7zSA1GXew.

Louis Sclavis’ Rameau disc is well worth a listen – http://www.allmusic.com/album/les-violences-de-rameau-mw0000004324.

Jason Moran does a version of Brahms’ Intermezzo op.118, no. 2 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR0b6xL5yKo (on the same record, he does his party trick of playing along with phone messages, if you haven’t heard that – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uftkxUCWAoc).

The post is a bit lengthy, but you can ignore everything below if you wish. It would take me ages to edit it further. This is my jazz – classics playlist. Other suggestions welcome.

I have a particular soft spot for jazzed-up classics. I like the idea of taking a standard and seeing how far you can take the starting idea.

Does the synthesiser work of Tomita count?
